Building a strong foundation for early learners through Activity Based Learning (ABL)

Improving the learning outcomes of children is achievable only if preschool sessions are designed to be more activity-based and interactive. Recognizing this, South Orissa Voluntary Action (SOVA) has developed an innovative tool called “11 Steps to School Readiness,” which enhances the effectiveness of the ‘Nua Arunima’ program at Anganwadi centers. The tool, based on the guidelines of Nua Arunima, provides a structured approach for Anganwadi Workers (AWWs) to conduct a series of engaging, activity-focused sessions. The tool divides the preschool activities into manageable small steps, helping AWWs to deliver them in an organized manner while ensuring that children stay actively engaged.

What makes this tool particularly effective is its pictorial format. Since it is visual and easy to follow, it enables AWWs to implement the program with minimal difficulty, even if they have limited formal training. The use of pictures makes it easier for the AWWs to understand and execute each step, thus improving the consistency and quality of the sessions. Moreover, it supports a child-centered approach, as the visual cues guide both the facilitators and the children through each activity in a playful and engaging manner. As a result, the “11 Steps to School Readiness” tool not only helps in improving children’s learning outcomes but also fosters a more dynamic and enjoyable learning environment. The tool’s flexibility allows it to be adapted to the specific needs of each Anganwadi center, making it a valuable resource in promoting school readiness among preschool children. Furthermore, by focusing on active participation and hands-on learning, it encourages cognitive, social, and emotional development, which are key factors for preparing children for formal schooling.
